RedR Australia was pleased to partner once again with the Pacific Community (SPC) to deliver a bespoke Humanitarian Logistics in the Pacific course in Fiji in early August, ahead of the region's upcoming disaster season.
SPC is the Pacific's principal scientific and technical organisation, and its staff are on the front line of the region's response to climate-related disasters — cyclones, flooding and other extreme weather events that hit Pacific communities with increasing frequency and severity. Ahead of each disaster season, SPC works to deepen and evolve the skills of its people, and training is one of the most effective ways to do this: it strengthens systems, sharpens coordination, and builds readiness before a crisis strikes, rather than during one.
The course brought together 24 participants working across logistics and warehousing initiatives supported by SPC — local practitioners who bring deep, on-the-ground expertise in their fields and regions, and who are often among the first to respond when disaster hits.
Logistics represents 60 to 80% of expenditure in humanitarian aid(1) , making it one of the most critical — and most under-recognised — functions in any response. Delivered by experienced RedR Australia trainers Phil, Anthea and Madeleine, the course introduced participants to the systems, planning tools and coordination processes needed to run an effective humanitarian logistics operation, from procurement and warehousing through to last-mile distribution.
Participant Tonga Tukupa Fisi'ihoi, from Tonga's National Disaster Management Office, reflected on the value of the training: "It's very important to understand what needs to be done to meet the expected demand and the flow of assistance to beneficiaries."
